Where the numbers come from

The figures come from Census American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020 to 2024. For owner-occupied homes, county and state rates divide the median tax paid by the median home value. Rules covering exemptions, appeals, and due dates come from state law, county assessors, and state revenue departments. Each one includes a link to its original page. Our editorial policy covers the review and correction process for them.
