Sources of the figures

All figures come from Census American Community Survey 5-year estimates covering 2020 to 2024, which combine five years of answers so small counties are included. The file draws on three Census tables:

To find the effective rate, divide the median real estate tax by the median home value, multiply by 100, and round to two decimals. Autauga County, Alabama, appears in the first row above, and its $627 tax against a $207,200 home value equals 0.30%.

Each December the Census publishes its next ACS 5-year release, and the file is refreshed then. Because the download address does not change, any link to it continues to work.

What to know before using it

  • Homeowners actually paid these amounts, rather than the legal tax rate. The effect of exemptions and assessment limits is already included.
  • Every figure is an estimate drawn from a five-year survey, and each one carries a margin of error that is larger in small counties.
  • For one home, the tax bill depends on that property's value and the taxing units that apply. It is estimated by the property tax calculator using this file.
