Property tax appeal savings estimator
Your appeal could lower the value listed on your notice. See how much that would save you each year.
This result is calculated from the numbers you entered. It does not forecast the decision an appraisal review board will make.
How a property tax appeal works
- Check your assessment notice for the listed value and the mailing date. That date starts the appeal window, which is often 30 to 60 days.
- Look for three to five similar homes that sold for less, near the date the county sets home values, or find proof of damage the assessor overlooked.
- Before the appeal deadline, send your appeal form to the board of review, appraisal district, or county assessor.
- Attend the hearing, or take the assessor's offer if it is fair. Your bill for the year is based on the new value.
Appeal firms usually take 25 to 50 percent of what you save in the first year, and they charge nothing if the value stays the same. If you file the appeal yourself, you pay the price of your time. A few counties also charge a small fee.
