Editorial policy
Sources
Only official and public sources are used: rates and home values come from the Census Bureau, while exemptions, deadlines and due dates come from state statutes, state revenue departments, county assessors and appraisal districts. Every rule on a state page names its source and links to it. A rule shown for one county as an example is labeled with that county's name.
Working out the numbers
To find the effective rate, divide the median real estate tax paid by the median home value. The calculator applies your county's effective rate to the home value you type. If no county median comes from the Census, the calculator notes this and uses the state rate. Bill amounts are rounded to the dollar, and rate amounts to two decimals.
Things we leave out
If no official page for a state rule can be found, we leave that rule out and say so instead of guessing. Owner names, account numbers and listings are not published here.
Corrections
If you find a figure or rule that is not right or out of date, email contact@property-tax-calculator.org and include the page. Add the official source too, if you can. We compare it with that source, then correct what the page says.
