Additional Indiana property tax rules to know

  • The supplemental homestead deduction applies automatically alongside the standard deduction. The reduction in Marion County equals 40% of the assessed value that remains following the standard deduction.
  • Hendricks County's schedule sets the standard deduction at $48,000 (tax year 2025, payable 2026), then $40,000 (2026 pay 2027). It eventually falls to $0 by 2030 pay 2031. The supplemental rate begins at 40%, increases to 46%, and then goes higher.
  • Homeowners eligible for the standard homestead deduction receive an extra credit of one-tenth of their tax liability, up to $300. For taxes payable in 2027, apply by January 15, 2027.
  • Failure to notify the auditor within 60 days after a property loses homestead deduction eligibility results in the deduction amount and a 10% civil penalty owed by the owner.
